Well of course the participation decreased.
Most were not moderated well if at all.
Those who did moderate the groups and questions raised lost patience with
newbies.
The moderators became unhelpful trolls! and berated anyone
who asked a question that they deemed inconsistant with their worldview.
If a failure occured, then the user reported it but there was no where to
turn when the people that took it on themselves
became irritating enemies of the new users.
Microsoft let it go merrily on, and it finally showed up in their product
development with the release of MSOffice 2007.
Whoever thought that new menu system was a good idea should have been keel
hauled and made to walk the plank!
Now someone is releasing a stealth malware to kill OE and
older versions of MSOffice starting with data corruption of the Save and
Save with backup functions.
The program crashes frequently now and has become unstable.
If MS wanted to commit market suicide, well then it is well on the way to
achieving that.
The next generation does better? HA! They don't even know when they Charlie
Foxtrot their own products!
and ***@mn, I did really like MS Office 2003 and previous versions.

Why?
As you may know, newsgroups have existed for many years now; however, the
traffic in the Microsoft newsgroups has been steadily decreasing for the
past several years while customers and participants are increasingly
finding
solutions in the forums on Microsoft properties and third party sites.
This
move will unify the customer experience, centralize content, make it
easier
for active contributors to retain their influence, mitigate redundancies
and
make the content easier to find by customers and search engines through
improved indexing. Additionally, forums offer a better user and spam
management platform that will improve customer satisfaction by encouraging
a
healthy discussion in a clean community space. To this end, Microsoft
will
begin to progressively shift available resources to the forums technology
and discontinue support for newsgroups.
In addition to offering a compelling online browser experience, for those
users who prefer to use an NNTP (newsgroup) reader to participate in the
newsgroups community, we have developed a solution called the NNTP Bridge
which allows a user to connect a variety of supported NNTP readers to the
forums they would like to participate in and continue having the NTTP
reader
