XP Pro SP3, Office 2003.

After determining that AutoUpdate's going to the Microsoft Update site was
causing all sorts of problems with my system - long scan times, frequent
daily scans, 100% CPU usage during scan, system hangs and update install
failures - I turned off Auto Update, opted out of the Microsoft Update site
and manually go to the Windows Update site to get updates for XP and
associated features on update Tuesday (or when hot fixes are announced).
However, I can not get updates for Office at the Windows Update site, which
points to is Microsoft Update site for Office updates. I'm not going back
there until MS gets the problem fixed with that site (I understand they have
their best people working on it).

So, where can one go to get updates for Office 2003?

I'm afraid those issues are local to your system...
I use Microsoft Update on a number of systems at work and I never have
seen those issues.
In fact that surprises me, as manually downloading the updates and then
installing them from the local network *does* lead to issues like you
describe!
(running an Office 2003 update using ohotfix.exe takes half an hour of
100% CPU use on many systems)

The Microsoft Security Bulletin Search page:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/current.aspx

also lists the Office updates. You can filter to see only those.
